Amen Mish! We've survived thousands of years without all this bullshit and we'll continue to live too.

I admit I don't understand a lot of the science involved in biochemistry - but I do try. I may waffle a bit and end up more confused than when I began. I like to think that just trying is excellent and it is a good thing.

Poor Linz with mousse overdose. :(

Definitely recommend cycling - I cannot wait to get back on mine. Hearing aids on the 30th then I'm all over it!

you and kara don't need a fan to be cool. :D

also food! so last night, i said to myself, "life seems small and boring. i want a mousse." then i got a delicious-looking little mousse cake from whole foods and ate most of it. then i felt very thick for a while and realized i got a mousse to feel like life was fun? weird, right. i think i'd be better off just riding my bike and eating a little chocolate on a regular basis.

I don't agree that your body doesn't care how various forms of nutrition come. Manufacturing processes can alter the chemical mix, especially when components (like most added vitamins) are themselves chemically manufactured. Biochemistry is a weird and wonderful area that we still don't fully understand. Also, my own experiences tend to show that certain combinations make for a happier and less complaining body.

I do, however, agree that there is no such thing as a bad food (assuming we're not allowing poisoned items to count as food :P). There perhaps is a concept of inappropriate food, but that is far less strict than most people are told to believe. Inappropriate isn't having that chocolate bar, it's being hungry enough to eat a lot of them rather than look into a better and more rounded (but still delicious and could well still be traditionally 'bad'!) actual meal. But if that's all you have available, then that's all you have available to eat and that's fine too.

Intuitive eating is what I do, and generally it actually seems to lead to quite a reasonable diet (note, technical usage, not the lolweightloss form). In fact, the irony is that most successful life-long weight management things seem to be based around that very idea - just eat when hungry, and try to not when you are not hungry. Strangely we have been around for more than 10,000 years, and it's only in the last millennium that anyone has particularly really cared about how and when we eat. Before then we just ate when we could and needed to, and strangely - it worked nicely :P

I'm actually a very big fan of what I term a darwinian or evolutionary approach to understanding this whole area. Whilst fat might carry some risks, it would not still be possible if it were too deadly. Sure, you could breed before the issues, but then groups who had genes to not have those issues would have more manpower to support and defend the group, and hence be more successful. The same thing applies to our choice of diets.

I get equally cross with the media. The BBC ran a scare article the other day about kids in schools not getting enough fruit and veg, when but a few weeks previously nutritionists actually found that young kids were getting too much fruit and veg and not enough biscuits and fatty things. Oh the hypocrisy.
