The room is spinning round

Today has been so fun!! I’m tired so my words are going to get stuck and I’ll probably over explain things, but I’m so delighted with how thing turns out I cannot not share.

Weasel and I live in street that forms a horseshoe with two others; there’s no through way. Our neighbours on the top edge of the horseshoe held a Street Party today to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. They got permission to close their road to traffic and invited our everyone on all three streets.

It was so incredibly simple, but so effective. They photocopied an A4 sheet with info on for everyone and put it through our letter boxes. There was no RSVP, there was no pressure to attend. Just had to bring some food to share, plates and drinks for yourself. Simple.

So yesterday, I made oatmeal fudge bars and this morning I put olives, mozzarella pearls and cherry tomatoes on cocktail sticks. Loaded up several disposable trays. I took my wheelchair just in case and Weasel took her walking sticks.

We got there just before half one and there were probably 20 people milling around. So many people had offered tables and chairs for use that I didn’t need my wheelchair. There were three big tables of various yummy food. Two BBQs going. People had really put in the effort.

As the day moved on more people showed up, I reckon we had 60 overall. I got to put names with faces and chatted about everything – pets, the houses, the flight path over our houses, music [there was an excellent musician preforming all sorts of wonderful songs], the Jubilee, food, histories [how long we'd been in the street] and everything in between. I really enjoyed myself. Everyone was saying that they’d love to do this again, so I think it may become an annual street party. Closing the top of the horseshoe doesn’t have a huge impact and it was such a success.

I made a huge double batch of fudge bars because I didn’t know how many people would be there. I have one tray still full and 10 left on the other. I’ll be freezing them now. I have a party I can take them to in July.
